Exams at Gaia Learning

Gaia Learning is a fully online alternative provision. We specialise in flexible, personalised teaching through small groups and one-to-one learning.

Examinations work slightly differently in an online setting, so it’s important that families, schools, and local authorities understand what we can offer, what we can support, and what must be arranged externally.

This page explains:

  • Which qualifications we teach
  • Which exams we can register learners for
  • How remote invigilation works
  • When external exam centres are required
  • Costs, timelines, and expectations
  • How we support access arrangements

Pearson Edexcel iGCSEs (Modular)

Gaia Learning is a registered online centre with Pearson Edexcel, which allows us to offer modular iGCSEs in a fully online format.

Subjects currently offered in group classes:

  • Maths – iGCSE (Modular)
  • English Language – iGCSE (Modular)
  • Double Science (Combined Science) – iGCSE (Modular)
  • History – iGCSE (Modular)

What does 'Modular' mean?

  • Learners sit one module at a time
  • Modules can be spread across the course duration and retaken to improve a grade (exam fee applies to retakes too)
  • Once all modules are completed, the full iGCSE is awarded
  • Exams can be sat via remote invigilation or in person (through partners)

Modular iGCSEs are only available through approved online centres in the UK. Most physical exam centres in the UK cannot offer modular GCSE routes.

How does it work for Functional Skills?

We offer:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills English
  • Level 2 Functional Skills Maths

In addition:

  • Learners can study Entry Level through to Level 2 Functional Skills with us
  • Levels other than Level 2 are supported via one-to-one teaching
  • Exams are sat remotely through our approved partners

How do we register for Exams?

Exam registration support:

For Pearson Edexcel modular iGCSEs, where available and supported, we can offer:

  • One-to-one teaching
  • Exam registration through Gaia Learning
  • Remote invigilation

For non-Pearson exam boards or subjects requiring in-person exams:
  • Exam registration must be completed externally
  • Teaching support is available

What if my learner is registered for exams elsewhere?

Learners Already Registered for Exams Elsewhere

Many learners join Gaia Learning:

  • Already registered for GCSEs
  • Studying through a previous school, exam centre, or local authority arrangement

In these cases, we can support learners through:

  • Revision programmes
  • Targeted tuition
  • Closing knowledge gaps
  • Exam technique and confidence building

Important note on exam boards:

If a learner is registered with an exam board other than Pearson Edexcel, we ask that families, schools, or local authorities:

  • Share specifications and topic coverage where possible
  • Provide access to any locked or centre-restricted resources
  • Clearly communicate dates for registered exams so educators are aware as they plan

This allows us to:

  • Align teaching accurately
  • Avoid duplication or missed content
  • Give realistic guidance on exam readiness and timelines

Exam Boards, Alignment & Group Classes

Exam Boards, Alignment & Group Classes

Our group classes are aligned specifically to Pearson Edexcel specifications.

While there is substantial overlap between exam boards:

  • Learners coming from a different exam board may have gaps
  • This can mean exams take longer to complete
  • Educators will advise on readiness and pacing

Within group classes, we cannot tailor teaching to alternative exam boards. Tailored exam-board-specific teaching is available via one-to-one tuition only.

We will never prevent a learner from entering an exam, but we will always give honest professional advice about:

  • Readiness
  • Risk of entering too early
  • The healthiest route to success

Joining Part Way Through the Academic Year

Learners who join Gaia Learning mid-year (not at the September start) will have missed a significant portion of taught content.

For learners joining group classes:

  • Educators will support them to catch up with missed learning
  • Catch-up assumes the learner can complete some independent work
  • Live lessons cannot be re-taught in full in group classes

If a learner is unable to catch up independently:

  • This should be taken into account when choosing an exam timeframe
  • Exams may need to be sat later than originally planned
  • Educators will advise on realistic readiness and pacing

We strongly encourage families and referrers to discuss:

  • Any existing exam deadlines
  • Desired timelines
  • Previous learning history at the point of joining (including which specification covered)

Remote Invigilation

Because Gaia Learning is fully online, we do not offer in-person exams ourselves.

Exams that can be sat remotely through us:

  • Pearson Edexcel modular iGCSEs
  • Functional Skills exams (via partners)

Remote invigilation includes:

  • Live online supervision
  • Identity and environment checks
  • Strict exam regulations
  • The healthiest route to success

In-person Exams & External Exam Centres

For learners who wish to:

  • Sit iGCSEs in person
  • Sit non-Pearson exam boards
  • Sit subjects not currently offered by Gaia Learning

We work with Tutors & Exams, a nationwide network of approved in-person exam centres. Current Gaia Learning learners are eligible for a partnership discount with Tutors & Exams. Ask us for the current discount code, and we’ll support you with next steps.

Exam Timelines & Expectations

We ask that any learner joining Gaia Learning who has:

  • A specific exam deadline
  • Existing registrations
  • Planned exam windows

We do not recommend “cramming” GCSEs into one year. In our experience, accelerated exam timelines can negatively impact:

  • Learner wellbeing
  • Confidence
  • Long-term outcomes

Our educators will always recommend the most appropriate and sustainable pathway, based on the learner’s needs and circumstances.

Independent Study & Access Arrangements

As an online provision:

  • We cannot replicate the full teaching hours of a physical school
  • Learners are expected to complete independent study

We support this through:

  • Structured independent tasks
  • 24/7 access to online classrooms and resources
  • Recommended textbooks or workbooks where appropriate
  • One-to-one support where needed

If independent work is not possible:

  • GCSEs may need to be completed over a longer timeframe
  • Additional support may be recommended

Access arrangements are available across all exam routes, including:

  • iGCSEs sat through Gaia Learning
  • Functional Skills
  • Exams sat through Tutors & Exams or other centres

We will:

  • Support learners with the application process
  • Help organise evidence where possible

However:

  • Decisions rest with the exam board or exam centre
  • Additional assessments or paperwork may be required
  • Approval is not guaranteed
