At Gaia Learning, we believe every learner has something worth celebrating. Now, we have another way to recognise their progress, build confidence and celebrate what they can achieve.
We’re pleased to announce that Gaia Learning has been approved to deliver the AQA Unit Award Scheme (UAS), giving our learners new opportunities to have their achievements recognised as they work towards their individual learning goals.
For children and young people who have found traditional education challenging, recognising progress in smaller, meaningful steps can make a real difference.
What Is the AQA Unit Award Scheme?
The AQA Unit Award Scheme is designed to recognise what learners know, understand and can do. Rather than relying on one final exam or qualification, learners can complete individual units of learning and receive an official AQA certificate for each unit they successfully achieve.
The scheme covers a wide range of topics, from academic subjects and digital skills to life skills, creative activities and work-related learning.
Each certificate records the specific learning outcomes a learner has demonstrated. Over time, these certificates can build into a portfolio that showcases their skills, knowledge and achievements.
It’s about recognising progress along the way, not just waiting for one big milestone.
Why This Matters for Gaia Learners
At Gaia Learning, we understand that every child learns differently. Some thrive with traditional lessons and exams, while others need a more flexible approach that takes account of their interests, needs and individual circumstances.
The AQA Unit Award Scheme complements this approach by giving us another way to recognise what learners achieve.
For example, a learner might develop practical life skills, explore a creative interest or work towards a particular academic goal. As they complete suitable units and demonstrate the required learning outcomes, they can receive certificates that recognise their progress.
For a child who has struggled with confidence or engagement in education, these smaller steps can offer something positive to work towards and a tangible reminder of what they have accomplished.
Celebrating Progress, Building Confidence
When a child finds learning difficult, it can sometimes feel as though their efforts go unnoticed, particularly when they are not measured through traditional tests or grades.
But progress doesn't always look like a GCSE result.
It might be learning a new skill, completing a piece of work they are proud of, developing greater independence or discovering an interest that inspires them to keep learning.
The AQA Unit Award Scheme gives learners opportunities to have these achievements formally recognised. Each certificate can become part of a growing record of what they have learned and the skills they have developed.
For parents, this can also offer a clearer picture of their child's progress and something positive to celebrate together.
It is important to note that AQA Unit Awards are recognition of achievement, not formal qualifications like GCSEs or BTECs. They do not replace formal qualifications, but provide a record of specific skills, knowledge and learning outcomes achieved.
Learning That Starts With Your Child
Our approval to deliver the AQA Unit Award Scheme reflects something that has always mattered at Gaia Learning: creating opportunities for children to learn in ways that work for them.
By combining personalised, interest-led learning with recognition through AQA Unit Awards, we can help learners work towards achievable goals while celebrating the skills and knowledge they develop along the way.
Every child has strengths. Every child can make progress. And every achievement, however big or small, deserves to be recognised.
